Shipping Dimensions or Weight Exceeded

This error appears when a product’s weight or package dimensions are larger than what the selected calculated-shipping carrier allows.

Error Key: CalculatedShippingExceedDimensionOrWeight

How Calculated Shipping Works #

Calculated shipping uses your declared package weight and dimensions to generate a real-time shipping quote at checkout. Because the quote comes from a carrier, the package must fall within that carrier’s size and weight limits. If it doesn’t, the carrier cannot generate a rate and Etsy rejects the listing.

Important: Etsy’s calculated shipping is currently only available to sellers using USPS or Canada Post. If you use a different carrier, you must use flat-rate shipping instead.

Carrier Size and Weight Limits #

  • USPS: Maximum combined length + girth of 108 inches. Maximum weight is 70 lbs.
  • UPS / FedEx Ground (flat-rate only on Etsy): Maximum combined length + girth of 165 inches.

Dimensional (DIM) weight may also apply: carriers calculate DIM weight as (Length × Width × Height) ÷ 166 (for USPS Priority Mail in pounds). If the DIM weight exceeds the actual scale weight, the DIM weight is used as the billable weight.

Why This Happens #

  • The product’s declared weight or dimensions genuinely exceed the carrier’s maximum
  • A unit mismatch — for example, grams entered where kilograms were expected, or centimetres where inches were required
  • The package dimensions were entered as the outer box size instead of the item-when-packed size

Note: Etsy asks for the item size when packed — this means the item plus any wrapping or padding (bubble wrap, tissue paper), but not including the outer shipping box.

How to Fix It #

  1. Review the product’s weight and all three dimensions (length, width, height) for obvious errors such as unit mismatches or over-large values.
  2. Correct any wrong values. Remember to enter dimensions as the item + packing materials, not the full outer box.
  3. If the item genuinely exceeds carrier limits (e.g., large furniture), switch the product to a flat-rate shipping profile instead of calculated shipping.
  4. Retry the upload.
