This error appears when a product has no title. Etsy requires every listing to have a title — it is a mandatory field and cannot be left blank.
Error Key: TitleEmpty
Etsy’s Title Requirements #
Etsy enforces several rules on listing titles. The most basic is that a title must exist. Additional requirements include:
- Maximum 140 characters (letters, numbers, spaces, and punctuation all count)
- Must begin with a letter or number — titles cannot start with a space or special character
- Allowed special characters: % : & (each may appear only once)
- Prohibited characters: $ ^ ` . ° · and others — use only standard letters, numbers, and Etsy-permitted punctuation
Etsy’s 2025 title guidance also recommends keeping titles under 15 words, leading with the most important descriptor (what the item actually is), and avoiding filler words like “perfect” or “beautiful” that belong in the description rather than the title.
Why This Happens #
- No title was entered when the product was created in Shopify or the app
- The title field was cleared before or during a sync
- A sync or import mapped no value to the title field
How to Fix It #
- Open the affected product in Shopify or the Etsy Integration – DPL app.
- Add a descriptive title that clearly identifies what the item is (e.g., “Handmade Ceramic Coffee Mug — 12oz, Speckled Blue Glaze”).
- Make sure the title:
- Is not blank
- Starts with a letter or number
- Is 140 characters or fewer
- Save the product and retry the upload.
Tip: Front-load your most important keyword — only the first 40 characters or so are visible in Etsy search results, so make sure the item type and key detail appear at the start.
