2.1 Understanding Tax and VAT Synchronization #
The way tax information is synced depends on what data is provided by Etsy.
- Tax Information
Tax information, such as Sales Tax, is provided by Etsy’s API and can be automatically synced to Shopify when available.
When Etsy includes tax details in an order, the app will transfer that information directly to the corresponding Shopify order.
- VAT Information
Unlike Sales Tax, Etsy’s API does not typically provide VAT information to the app.
Because of this limitation, the app allows you to configure VAT settings manually. These settings are then used when syncing Etsy orders to Shopify so that VAT can be calculated correctly.
- VAT Configuration Options
The app provides two methods for configuring VAT.
- Global VAT Rate
If all of your orders use the same VAT percentage, you can configure a single VAT rate that will be applied to every synced order.
This option is recommended when your VAT requirements are the same regardless of the customer’s location.

- Country-Specific VAT Rates
If your VAT rates vary by country, you can configure different VAT percentages for different destinations.
When an Etsy order is synced, the app will automatically determine the buyer’s destination country and apply the corresponding VAT rate that you have configured.
To learn more about configuring Country-Specific VAT Rates, please refer to the guide below:
Country-Specific VAT Configuration
- Enable the Is your Etsy product’s price inclusive of VAT? setting.
This setting determines whether the prices of your Etsy products already include VAT.
After enabling the setting, select the option that matches your pricing structure and enter the appropriate VAT percentage according to your requirements.
The app will use these settings when calculating VAT during order synchronization.

- Example
The example below demonstrates how tax and VAT information appears in Shopify after an order is synced from Etsy.
- Tax information provided by Etsy is transferred automatically.
- VAT is calculated using the VAT settings configured within the app.
- If Country-Specific VAT Configuration is enabled, the VAT rate applied will depend on the buyer’s destination country.

Once configured, tax information provided by Etsy and VAT information calculated using your app settings will be included in the Shopify order automatically whenever an Etsy order is synced.
This ensures that your Shopify orders accurately reflect the tax and VAT amounts applicable to the original Etsy transaction.
This is how your Tax/VAT information will be synced from Etsy orders to Shopify orders.
